Strategies for studying gene regulation mechanisms have changed dramatically over the past several years in light of the emergence of complete genome sequences for many organisms as well as the development of or improvements to technologies such as chromatin immunoprecipitation, RNA interference, microarrays, and proteomics.

Michael F. Carey, University of California, Los Angeles, was one of the authors of the first edition. His principal focus is biochemical mechanisms of gene activation and silencing, specifically the mechanism by which genes are controlled synergistically by upstream activators. He also studies the biochemistry of transcription on chromatin templates and the epigenetic control of gene expression.

Craig L. Peterson, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, concentrates on research that explores how chromosome structure influences nuclear processes and regulates genomic stability. He especially focuses on chromatin remodeling enzymes and the dynamics of chromatin fibers and their role in DNA repair, transcription, and replication.

Stephen T. Smale, University of California, Los Angeles, was also one of the authors of the first edition. His research focus is gene regulation during inflammatory and innate immune responses, with an emphasis on the mechanisms by which chromatin structure selectively regulates genes that promote inflammation. He also studies the regulation of immune system development by transcription factors and tumor suppressor proteins.
